Happy International Day of the Girl Child!
Every year on October 11 we celebrate International Day of the Girl Child to highlight the needs of the girls and the social, economic and structural challenges faced by them in the realization and enjoyment of their rights. This year in 2021, we celebrate the Day of the Girl Child under the theme, “Digital generation. Our generation”. The theme focuses on giving equal access to the digital devices for girls and targeted investments to facilitate opportunities for girls to safely and meaningfully access, use, lead and design technology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital inclusion and literacy have opened new avenues to learning, earning and connecting for girls. However, the pandemic has also created a gender digital gap around more than connectivity and online safety, girls are less likely than boys to use and own devices, and gain access to tech related skills and jobs. It is our responsibility to ensure that by addressing the inequity and exclusion that span across all sections of the society. The source of change for gender equality, and technology is a crucial tool to support their work, skills, jobs and leadership. Concerted efforts from all sections of society are required – families, communities, the private sector, civil society, children and youth and the media. We must together establish an environment for girls and young women in designing and learning for the digital world.
